6 Things You Might Not Have Known about the Six Nations Championship

  1. The Six Nations Championship is one of the world’s oldest sports competitions, getting its start as the Home Nations Championship in 1883.
  2. The top three Grand Slam winners of all time are England (13), Wales (11), and France (9).
  3. England have won 25 Triple Crowns in the Championship’s history, making it the current record holder. Wales comes in a close second with 20 Triple Crowns to its name.
  4. Ireland’s Ronan O’Gara holds two records, one for the most points scored throughout a career (557) and another for most career penalties (109).
  5. The record for highest number of points scored in a single match is held by England’s Johnny Wilkinson (35 against Italy in 2001).
  6. Although the trophy is made mostly of silver, the inside of it has been coated with gold to prevent corrosion caused by champagne.
