Although the history of mixed martial arts goes back over 6000 years, the MMA we know now didn’t get its start until later in the twentieth century. By that time, mouthguards had already become the norm in contact sports.

Today, mouthguards are mandatory according to the vast majority of MMA associations such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The rule set most observe (the UFC included) is the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, which identify mouthguards as pieces of equipment fighters must wear.
