Boxers don’t use a lot of gear, but there’s one piece of equipment that’s a must-have regardless of age, skill, or level—a mouthguard.
On our boxing page, we take a closer look at how mouthguards have been and are used in the sport before talking about how you can go about choosing the mouthguard that will be right for you. This blog previews some of the information we share on the page, so keep reading to learn more.
A Look at the Use of Mouth Protection in Boxing
Boxing plays a pivotal role in the story of the mouthguard, as it was the sport for which mouthguards were first invented and used. The earliest “mouthguards” were made by boxers themselves in the nineteenth century using a range of materials like sponge and cotton. London dentist Woolf Krause pioneered the first single-use, rubber-based mouthguards in the 1890s before his son Philip Krause went on to make them re-useable in the early 1900s.
The watershed moment came during a match between Jack Sharkey and Mike McTigue that saw McTigue, the frontrunner, forfeit with a chipped tooth and gashed lip. There’s a video of this fight, which you can find on our boxing page.
In the years that followed, boxing clubs and associations—professional and amateur alike—became some of the first to make mouthguards mandatory for their athletes. Today, a mouthguard is one piece of equipment boxers simply cannot do without.
