Frequently Asked Questions

Does the IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE come with a storage case?

IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE mouthguards are supplied with light, durable cases to help keep them safe and clean when they’re not in use. As per regulatory processes, all CE-approved mouthguards must come with storage cases that have been drop tested to ensure they won’t snap open while falling or upon landing.

How should I clean and store my IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE mouthguard?

There are a few simple things you can do to keep your IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE clean:

  • Brush your teeth before you wear it to remove bacteria from your mouth. You should brush your teeth again after taking your IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE out as well.
  • Rinse your IGNIS® CONVERTIBLEwith cool to lukewarm water after each use.

If you’re exposing your IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE to water, take care and ensure the water is only room temperature. If the water is too hot, that can cause your mouthguard to become distorted and no longer fit you properly.

Make sure your IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE is completely dry before storing it in a clean case, which ideally will have holes or vents that allow the mouthguard inside to breathe.

Can I play contact sports with a Makura mouthguard?

Makura’s mouthguards are suitable for players of any sport, contact and non-contact. All of our products are CE certified and have achieved Level 2 and Level 3 Impact Resistance through independent testing.

The IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE is Level 2 Impact Resistant. It features our unique SHOKBLOKER® outer for improved shock absorption alongside GELFORM® liners for maximum comfort.

Remember: whatever your sport—no matter your level or how often you play—a mouthguard is always the right move when it comes to protecting yourself from contact-related injuries.

How do I find my size?

The IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE is available in two sizes:

  • Junior for age 10 and under.
  • Senior for age 11 and over.

Ultimately finding the right size mouthguard is a highly personal process influenced by the size of your mouth, its shape, and your own individual preferences.

Do Makura mouthguards contain any harmful materials?

No, our mouthguards do not contain any harmful materials. As part of the CE approval process, all of our mouthguard products (including the IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE) undergo innocuous and chemical testing to ensure the materials they contain won’t hurt or negatively affect our users.

The specific standards that apply to mouthguards are:

  • BS EN 1186: 2002, required for any plastics that come into contact with foodstuffs. This test is done to confirm that chemicals won’t transfer from the plastic into user’s bodies in toxic quantities.
  • BS EN 71-3: 2013 measures the amount of certain elements like copper, mercury, and zinc that are scraped off solid materials when bitten, licked, or sucked.
  • PAH testing determines whether certain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are present in a given material.

Though not required as part of the CE certification process, we can also confirm that our mouthguards contain neither Formamide nor Bisphenol A (BPA).

Do Makura mouthguards contain latex?

No, you can rest assured that all Makura mouthguards are latex free.

Do Makura mouthguards contain BPA?

No, Makura mouthguards (including the IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE) have been tested to confirm that they do not contain Bisphenol A (otherwise known as BPA).

Do Makura mouthguards contain Formamide?

No, Makura mouthguards (including the IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE) have been tested to confirm that they do not contain Formamide.

Do Makura mouthguards work with braces?

Wearing braces doesn’t mean you can or should stop using a mouthguard whilst playing sports. If anything, it becomes more important to choose a braces-compatible mouthguard that will not only protect your teeth and mouth from soft-tissue injuries, but also safeguard the braces themselves. Without the protection of a mouthguard, a blow to the face can damage brackets, wires, and other fixed orthodontic appliances, resulting in costly dental bills for treatments.

The LITHOS PRO® is our ready-made mouthguard created specifically to be worn with braces. It features the ORTHO CHANNEL®, which fits carefully and securely over your braces to keep them protected and you comfortable.

I lost the instructions about how to mould my Makura mouthguard. Can you remind me?

Downloadable fitting instructions (PDF) for IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE mouthguards are available on our website in five languages: English, Español, Français, Deutsch, and Italiano.

For mouth-adapted BOIL & BITE® styles like the IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE, it’s crucial you follow the guidelines for your specific mouthguard. The principles are the same between each one (they need to be boiled, shaped, and cooled), but the details (how long you need to immerse them in hot water, for example) vary. To ensure the best fit, you must fit your mouthguard properly and as instructed.

How long do IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE mouthguards last?

Depending on factors like how intensively it’s used and how well it’s cared for, your IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE mouthguard can last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. In the majority of cases, though, we’d recommend replacing your mouthguard at least once per year. This will maximize both its effectiveness and hygiene.

Can I remould my IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE mouthguard?

Yes, you can reshape your IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE, though the number of times will vary due to factors including its type, its age, and how intensively it’s used.

Simply follow the fitting instructions for the IGNIS® CONVERTIBLE mouthguard. If you find that it no longer conforms properly or comfortably to your mouth, it might be time to purchase a new one.

Do mouthguards prevent concussions?

No, mouthguards do not prevent concussions or other types of mild traumatic brain injuries (MTBIs). Past studies have attempted to prove a link, but the evidence has never been strong enough to demonstrate a conclusive one.

What mouthguards do excel at is reducing the impact of dental and orofacial traumas like broken, chipped, dislodged, or impacted teeth as well as contusions, abrasions, and lacerations.
